If your goal is a beautiful smile, porcelain veneers are often the best way to accomplish that dream. A dental veneer is a thin shell of porcelain that is bonded onto the outer layer of the tooth's enamel allowing us to create teeth with beautiful color and shape. Each porcelain veneer is custom made by one of the master ceramists that are a part of our dental team.
In cosmetic dentistry, the factors that create a beautiful smile are the color of the teeth, the shape of the teeth, the spacing or crowding of teeth, where the lip falls, and the length of the teeth. The advantage of dental veneers in comparison to other cosmetic dental procedures is that veneers give our expert dentists complete control over many of those factors that create a beautiful smile.
With porcelain veneers, we must do a large amount of planning prior to initiating the process. The first step is a cosmetic dental consultation where the patient meets with our dental team to identify what can be done to improve their smile. Next, our dentists will analyze pictures and models of the current smile to determine how the smile can be improved. In many cases, a trial smile can be tested prior to making a permanent decision. Once the patient accepts the final design, the porcelain veneer process is started.
Frequently Asked Questions
What can I expect at a veneer consultation?
At your free cosmetic consultation with our team, you will learn more about the treatment options available to you. Because so many treatment options are available, this step is the best way to learn how you can improve your smile. In many cases, we may be able to create a beautiful smile for you without porcelain veneers. By whitening teeth with our in office whitening system, straightening teeth with Invisalign, reshaping teeth with polishing discs, and removing white spots or discoloration with enamel microabrasion, we can create a healthy beautiful smile that can last a lifetime. If those steps do not create the smile that you are looking for, porcelain veneers would be the next step to create a beautiful smile. If we decide to pursue porcelain veneers, we will take the time to design the smile you are looking for prior to beginning the procedure. After approving the smile we have chosen, we will move forward with reshaping your teeth, fabricating the veneers, and inserting the final result.
Do veneers pop off?
Many years ago when veneers were first being placed in dentistry, it was not uncommon for dental veneers to come loose. However, dental porcelain has improved significantly over the last few years, and the bonding material that holds the veneers to the teeth has become much stronger. When the time is taken to use the correct materials, and design a well thought out smile, porcelain veneers are very successful treatment options.
Do veneers look fake?
When veneers first came out, dental porcelain did not look natural, and patients sought an unnaturally white appearance. However, modern veneer porcelain can be made to look indistinguishable from natural teeth. Our goal for our patients is to receive a smile that looks very nice, but natural. Many of our patient's own family members would never know that they have porcelain veneers.
Do my teeth have to get filed down to nubs for veneers?
Because dental porcelain is so strong, we do not have to remove much tooth structure at all. Every case is different, and we will discuss treatment individually; however, in most cases we only have to create a small "seat" for the veneers on the teeth. This "seat" or margin that is typically invisible to the human eye allows us to place the veneers in the mouth in the proper orientation for a beautiful smile.
