Dental implants are one of the most exciting developments in dentistry over the past few decades. Dental implants have the potential to dramatically improve the quality of life for our patients. A dental implant is an artificial root that can replace missing teeth in a number of different ways
When a patient only needs to replace one or two teeth, a porcelain crown is cemented onto the dental implant. Prior to the invention of dental implants, metal or porcelain bridges were the only option to permanently replace teeth. Unfortunately, when a patient receives a bridge, good natural tooth structure must be removed which can lead to further decay. For this reason, a dental implant can be the best option to replace missing teeth in many patients.
In order for the dental implant to be well functioning for many years, a few steps are necessary prior to cementing the final crown. When the natural tooth is removed, the extraction socket should be filled with a bone graft material to maintain as much bone width and height as possible. It typically takes the body four months to regenerate natural bone in the site. After this time period, a three dimensional x-ray should be taken so that the implant can be digitally planned prior to the surgery.
The next step is to place the dental implant into the site. After the surgery is complete, it takes four to six months for the body to fuse to the titanium dental implant. After this time period is over, a mold of the implant and adjacent tooth is made so that a porcelain crown can be made in the laboratory. Finally, the porcelain crown is attached to the dental implant and the process is complete!
