If a patient is replacing a single tooth with a dental implant, an implant crown is the final result of that treatment plan. After the dental implant, or artificial root, is in place, an implant crown is fabricated and fused to the dental implant. As part of the procedure, a custom abutment is often fabricated to connect the porcelain implant crown to the dental implant. Today's implant crowns are made out of a very strong ceramic or porcelain material that matches the adjacent teeth perfectly. After treatment is complete, it would be difficult to identify if a tooth is an implant crown or natural tooth.
