Fluoride in Preventive Dentistry

Sensitive teeth? Hate getting cavities?  Recessed gums? We have good news! We are now offering fluoride varnish!

What is fluoride and what are the benefits?

  • Fluoride is a naturally occurring element that is clinically proven to prevent cavities and minimize sensitivity. Fluoride plays a major role in cavity prevention by preventing demineralization (breakdown) of enamel, enhancing remineralization of enamel, and inhibiting plaque bacteria.

Is fluoride safe?

  • Yes! Fluoride, in appropriate doses, has been proven to be safe in hundreds of studies. Fluoride is actually one of the most researched topics in dentistry! The benefits of fluoride in preventing dental decay has been known for over 65 years and topical fluoride has been around for over 25 years.

How effective is fluoride in fighting cavities?

  • Studies have proven that having a fluoride varnish applied on your teeth 2 times/year can reduce cavities by 25%-45%.

Who is most benefitted from a fluoride varnish?

  • The following people would benefit from a fluoride varnish: people with a high cavity risk, active decay, present of small cavities that the dentist is “monitoring” or “watching”, history of fillings and crowns or bridges, history of missing teeth, people with exposed root surfaces, people with sensitivity, people with dry mouth, people with enamel defects, people with suboptimal fillings or crowns that were previously completed.

How long do the benefits last?

  • The benefits of fluoride last several months (studies have shown anywhere from 3-6 months).

How can I get fluoride varnish applied on my teeth?

  • Easy! After your cleaning is complete, your hygienist or Dr. Carraway will offer you a fluoride varnish. If you would like, your hygienist will apply the varnish on your teeth and then instruct you to avoid eating or drinking for 30 minutes and avoid brushing your teeth for 4-6 hours. The application of the fluoride varnish takes about 60 seconds.

I’ve never had fluoride varnish offered at my previous visits…why are you offering now?

  • As we have grown in our practice, clinical knowledge and expertise, we are becoming more and more passionate about preventive dentistry. We are constantly working to become more knowledgeable about techniques that are safe and effective that will help our patients achieve optimal oral health. Dental caries (cavities) is one of the most prevalent “diseases” in the world. It is estimated that 2 billion people worldwide have been affected by dental decay. Approximately 90% of adults aged 20-64 have had decay in their mouth. That percentage reaches even higher to 96% in the older population. Fluoride is one of the only modalities clinically proven to fight cavities. We practice evidence-based dentistry and the studies have clearly illustrated the safety and efficacy of fluoride in preventing dental decay.

How much does it cost?

  • Many insurance companies cover fluoride varnish 2 times/year. If they do not cover fluoride varnish the price will be $47. If you have our in-office dental savings plan it will be $37.
