At Carraway Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we offer dental implants to Greer, SC patients. Dental implants can replace missing teeth in a number of different ways. When a patient only needs to replace one or two teeth, a porcelain crown is cemented onto the dental implant. If patients are missing several or all of their teeth, we can use a dental implant to retain a removable partial denture or complete denture. The dental implant allows the denture to “snap” into the implants so that the denture stays in place. Dental implants can be life-changing procedures for our patients, so we are excited about the possibilities they can provide.
Dr. Adam Carraway helps plan customized implant treatments. He collaborates with patients to provide restorative dental care tailored to their specific needs. Dental implants offer many benefits to patients who require more structure and balance in their smiles. Read on to learn more about how implant treatment can help restore missing teeth.
The Top Benefits of Dental Implants
Treatment options for replacing a missing tooth include a removable partial denture, a dental bridge, and a dental implant. Many people find that dental implants are superior to the alternative options because dental implants are more similar to natural teeth than the alternatives.
- Provide long-lasting treatment
- Look and feel like natural teeth
- Withstand biting forces of the jaw
- Prevent further bone loss
Dental implants are permanently fixed in the mouth and do not affect the natural teeth next to the implant like a dental bridge. Similar to a natural tooth, dental implants have a “root” and a “crown.” For these reasons, many patients find that dental implants are the best option for them; however, every case is unique, so we recommend a consultation with our dental team before deciding which tooth replacement option you would like to pursue.
Dental Implant Treatment
When a patient only needs to replace one or two teeth, we cover a dental implant with a porcelain crown. Before the invention of dental implants, metal or porcelain bridges were the only options to replace teeth. A dental implant can be the best option to replace missing teeth for many patients. We take a few steps to ensure the dental implant functions well for many years.
Dr. Carraway always ensures that patients are in good oral health before treatment. He can also provide bone grafting services if patients do not have enough bone in their mouths to support implants. Socket preservation is a bone grafting technique used in conjunction with tooth removal to prevent future bone loss. When removing a natural tooth, we can fill the extraction socket with bone graft material to maintain as much bone width and height as possible. Bone grafting typically takes 3-6 months to heal completely. After healing, we take a 3-D x-ray or CBCT scan to analyze bone regeneration and digitally plan the dental implant surgery.
The next step is to place the dental implant into the site. After the surgery is complete, it takes four to six months for the body to fuse to the titanium dental implant. Once the implants heal, we take a mold of the implant and adjacent tooth to create a crown. Finally, we attach the porcelain crown to the dental implant, and the process is complete!
If a patient is replacing a single tooth with a dental implant, an implant crown is the final result of that treatment plan. After the dental implant is in place, an implant crown is fabricated and fused to the dental implant. As part of the procedure, we fabricate a custom abutment to connect the porcelain implant crown to the dental implant. Today’s implant crowns are made from a very strong ceramic or porcelain material that perfectly matches the adjacent teeth. After treatment is complete, it would be difficult to identify if a tooth is an implant crown or a natural tooth.
Dental Implant FAQs
Read answers to frequently asked questions patients have about dental implants:
How long do dental implants last?
Dental implants are permanent restorations. Because tooth implants fuse with the jawbone, they are a permanent part of the mouth. This provides strength and durability to the smile for years to come.
Can I add dental implants to my existing dental bridge or dentures?
We can arrange dental implant treatment for added stability if you have a dental bridge or dentures. If your bridge or denture is old or worn, we may recommend a new one. We will examine your smile and restoration to determine if you need a new bridge or denture.
How natural-looking are dental implants?
Dental implants look like natural teeth. This is because porcelain ceramic dental crowns cover the tooth implants. These crowns color-match natural teeth, and they are also highly durable.
What are immediate implants?
Dental implants can be placed immediately after tooth extraction. In these cases, the natural tooth must be healthy to ensure the long-term health of the dental implant. Adequate bone has to exist around the natural tooth for implant placement after an extraction. In order to determine if a patient is a candidate for an immediate implant, we will take 3D x-rays or CBCT scans. We typically place immediate implants on front teeth where a patient does not want to miss a tooth for longer than they have to.
